Behavioral Health and Treatment Centers Earn International Accreditation, Demonstrating Commitment to Quality Care
DSHS Behavioral Health and Treatment Centers, Maple Lane Campus and Steilacoom Unit, have achieved CARF International accreditation, an accomplishment that reflects the team’s commitment to providing high-quality, person-centered services and to continuous improvement.
CARF International, the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities, is an independent, nonprofit accrediting organization that evaluates health and human services programs worldwide. Accreditation is awarded only after a thorough review process that examines service quality, safety, leadership, outcomes, and the overall experience of the people served.
Maple Lane Campus in Thurston County is a behavioral health treatment center that serves people found not guilty by reason of insanity and those under civil commitment orders. Steilacoom Unit provides competency restoration treatment to residents. Behavioral Health and Treatment Centers focus on stabilization and successful community integration through individualized treatment plans, medication management, and wraparound services tailored to each person’s needs.
Receiving CARF accreditation signifies that the two Behavioral Health and Treatment Centers meet internationally recognized standards and are dedicated to delivering services that support recovery, independence, and long-term success for those in their care.

The CARF accreditation process included an in-depth evaluation of program services, staff training, and performance outcomes. Surveyors also spoke with staff, leadership, and residents receiving services to gain a comprehensive understanding of how care is delivered.
For residents and families, CARF accreditation demonstrates that the facility is committed to maintaining high standards, measuring outcomes, and continuously improving services based on best practices and feedback.
The accreditation also reinforces the facilities’ focus on individualized treatment, respect, dignity, and creating a therapeutic environment where people can make meaningful progress toward recovery and greater independence.
